Back to the Future: Focus on Flood Preparedness
The New Jersey Association for Floodplain Management's (NJAFM) annual conference is the premier floodplain management conference in the Northeast. With over 400 members, this conference creates a forum for the region and nation's foremost experts in floodplain management.
The annual conference provides an opportunity for professionals in the fields of engineering, hydrology, geology, planning, code enforcement, floodplain management and emergency management to participate in plenary sessions and concurrent sessions on a broad range of relevant topics. The conference provides training opportunities and networking events.
The NJAFM 11th annual conference will be held on October 20, 21 and 22, 2015 at Bally’s in Atlantic City. The conference includes a moderated Cracker Barrel session on a wide array of topics on the evening of October 20; a full conference program on October 21; a half-day program on October 22; and a proctored Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) exam on the afternoon of October 22.
This year’s conference theme, “Back to the Future: Focus on Flood Preparedness,” was selected in recognition of the fact that New Jersey residents do not fully understand flood dynamics and floodplain management, and the actions they can take to mitigate impacts from flood events. This lack of understanding contributes to poor land use decisions, inadequate flood protection, insurance liability, threats to life and property, and the inability to engage in sound decision-making. Flood preparedness - including education, outreach and training on flood hazards and appropriate mitigation actions - is one of the most important initiatives to help protect people and property from the adverse impacts of floods.Consistent with this theme, the NJAFM 11th annual conference will focus on lessons learned from past flood and storm events in order to highlight the importance of flood preparedness. To promote the conference theme, NJAFM is proud to roll out a “Quick Guide to Floodplain Management in New Jersey,” which will provide New Jersey residents with basic information to enhance their understanding of flood hazards, flood mitigation and floodplain management programs in New Jersey.
Continuing education credits will be available for NY & NJ Professional Engineers, Code Officials, Certified Floodplain Managers, Certified Public Works Managers, Professional Planners and NJ Professional Land Surveyors.
