NJAFM 12th ANNUAL CONFERENCE
October 18, 19 & 20, 2016
Bally’s Atlantic City (Reservation Information Below)
SUPPORTING MUNICIPALITIES TO REDUCE FLOOD RISK
The 2016 New Jersey Association for Floodplain Management (NJAFM) annual conference will focus on activities that enhance municipal floodplain management capabilities through education and collaboration. From training local officials, to providing technical assistance, to providing guidance on zoning and land use plans, NJAFM and its members play a central role in supporting municipal programs to mitigate flood and storm hazards. Recognizing that municipal officials are on the front-line in protecting people and property from the adverse impacts of these natural hazards, the conference will highlight a broad range of ongoing activities and partnerships, with an emphasis on strengthening communication and collaboration between agencies and the public sector.
The New Jersey Association for Floodplain Management (NJAFM) annual conference is the premier floodplain management conference in the Northeast. With more than 40 speakers and several hundred participants, this is the conference that regional floodplain managers from the public and private sector plan to attend. In addition, many consulting firms and product vendors associated with floodplain management attend as well.
The annual conference provides an opportunity for professionals in the fields of engineering, hydrology, geology, planning, code enforcement, floodplain management and emergency management to participate in Plenary Sessions and concurrent technical sessions on a broad range of relevant topics. The conference also includes a number of training and networking events.
The NJAFM 12th annual conference will be held on October 18, 19 and 20, 2016 at Bally’s in Atlantic City. The conference includes a moderated Cracker Barrel session on a wide array of topics on the evening of October 18; a full conference program on October 19; a half-day program in the morning of October 20; a proctored Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) exam in the afternoon of October 20; and, additional training opportunities in the afternoon of October 20.
We are proud to announce that oceanographer and consultant John Englander will offer the keynote address during the luncheon on October 19. Mr. Englander is a leading expert on sea level rise and its societal and financial impacts. He assists businesses and communities in understanding the risks as rising seas challenge us to adapt to a changing shoreline. His book, High Tide on Main Street clearly explains the science behind sea level rise, the impending devastating financial impacts and the "intelligent adaptation" that all businesses and coastal communities must consider today. He believes that along with the tremendous risks in the coming decades there will also be enormous economic opportunities that will allow us to thrive if we begin now to plan and adapt for a more resilient future.
